Eastern Pondhawk

Erythemis simplicicollis, the eastern pondhawk, is a dragonfly of the family Libellulidae, and is native to the eastern two-thirds of the United States and southern Ontario and Quebec, Canada. It is a dragonfly that can usually be found on ponds and still waters. The male has a powdery blue thorax and abdomen, while the female has bright green thorax, green abdomen and black markings.

Common Green Darner

The common green darner(Anaz junius), are one of the few dragonflies who are able to migrate(from the northern United States south into Texas and Mexico). One of the most abundant species throughout North America. These species of dragonflies are one of the largest dragonflies with a wing span up to 80 mm. Male Green Darners have a green Thorax and it’s tail is blue, while the female is green all around.

Black Saddlebag

The black saddlebags is a species of skimmer dragonfly found all throughout North America. It has distinctive wings with  black blotches at their proximal ends, which make the dragonfly look as though it is wearing saddlebags, like horses and/or mules wear. Male and female saddlebags have virtually almost no visual differences.

Blue Dasher

The Blue Dasher is a dragonfly of the skimmer family. It is very common and widely distributed throughout North America and into the Bahamas. Blue Dasher’s wings are typically clear but may be flavescent and have a dark brown stripes dorsally.

Eastern Amberwings

 

Eastern Amberwings are very small, and are no larger than 25 mm.Eastern Amberwing actively mimics a wasp, the stripes on the dragonflies body encourages predators to stay away from them.These particular dragonflies prefer warm weather.

Widow Skimmer

 

Widow Skimmers are medium size and their total length is around 38-50 mm. It’s face is pale yellow or brown in females and young males. Their habitat includes still bodies of water, including marshy ponds, lakes and borrow pits. The wings have black Basel patched right near the thorax. Next to the black basal patches it has a powder blue wing spots and black stigmas.

Ruby-Meadowhawk

The Ruby Meadowhawk is part of the skimmer family and are a bright ruby red coloration. However the female ruby meadowhawk is a bright gold color. Both of their wings are clear and their average size is 1.3”. There Habitat includes wetlands, marshes, bogs, streams,etc.
